THE SHORT VERSION

  • Disney announced an animated television adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s book franchise for Disney Channel and Disney+ at a New York Comic Con anniversary panel.
  • The announcement describes 13-year-old Artemis discovering a hidden, high-tech fairy world and planning to steal magic to help his mother and family.
  • Disney has not published a premiere date, episode count, voice cast or animation studio in the greenlight announcement.

Disney announced the greenlight at a 25th-anniversary panel

The announcement came on October 11 during New York Comic Con’s “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel, where Eoin Colfer told the audience that Disney had greenlit an animated television adaptation. Disney’s company news page published the announcement the next day and names Disney Channel and Disney+ as the intended platforms. The timing links a new screen version to the first book’s 25th anniversary, but the announcement is about an approved animated series, not a premiere date or a finished production schedule. TheWrap independently reported the panel announcement and the same two platforms. The Walt Disney Company TheWrap

The two platform names do not establish a broadcast sequence. Disney has not said whether the channel will carry episodes before the streaming service or whether they will appear together. That leaves a specific viewing question open even though both Disney Channel and Disney+ are named. Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis says it is meant to introduce a new generation to Artemis’s world while honoring longtime fans. Disney also lists it on Disney+ alongside animated titles such as Phineas and Ferb and Big City Greens.

The series announcement describes a 13-year-old Artemis and a hidden fairy world

Disney’s official logline follows 13-year-old Artemis Fowl, a gifted boy who discovers an underground world of dangerous, technologically advanced fairies. He plans to capture one and take its magic to help his sick mother and save his family. That is the announced setup, not a scene-by-scene plot or an explanation of how the plan plays out. The premise brings together the series’ two central elements: a young mastermind who thinks like a criminal and a secret world whose inhabitants have both advanced technology and magic. It gives a potential viewer more to go on than “fantasy adaptation,” while keeping the ending out of the description. Disney’s series announcement

The Disney Books catalogue describes the original protagonist as 12, while the new series announcement calls him 13. Disney’s page for its 2020 live-action film also describes a 12-year-old Artemis, but that movie’s premise centers on his father being kidnapped and a ransom tied to the fairy world. The newly announced animated series instead names his mother and family as the stakes. These are details stated by Disney in separate summaries. The company has not explained the age difference or whether the animation will share continuity with the 2020 film, so the article leaves both points open. Disney Books Disney’s 2020 film page

Colfer joins Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson as executive producers

Colfer will executive produce the new series alongside Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson. TheWrap identifies Juwono’s credits on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series, and Evanson’s credits on DuckTales and Prep and Landing. Disney says Colfer will help develop the characters and lore for animation. TheWrap Disney’s announcement Disney identifies Juwono as an Emmy and Annie Award winner.

Disney Books lists eight mainline titles and separate companion formats

Disney Books’ Artemis Fowl catalogue lists the eight mainline novels from Artemis Fowl through The Last Guardian, including The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, The Lost Colony, The Time Paradox and The Atlantis Complex. It separates graphic novels and The Fowl Twins and currently lists a 25th Anniversary Edition, a Deluxe Collector’s Edition and a three-book paperback set.

Later entries show how the novels broaden the first book’s discovery premise. In The Eternity Code, a supercomputer Artemis builds with stolen fairy technology falls into the hands of a mob-connected IT billionaire, leaving only one fairy ally available despite Artemis being the fairies’ public enemy. The Lost Colony introduces a second juvenile genius trying to capture a demon for study and an ancient spell separating demons and humans that is at risk of unraveling. In The Opal Deception, Artemis’s fairy memories are wiped and Holly is on the run while a pixie plots against the fairy police. The Atlantis Complex gives Artemis the title condition after fairy-magic use and puts Atlantis under robot attack, with Holly trying to get him back. Disney Books lists the current Opal edition for ages 8–14 and the other three for ages 10–14.

TheWrap reports that Colfer’s series has sold more than 35 million copies and been translated into 48 languages. Disney’s event marks 25 years since the first book, published in 2001. Those figures describe the publishing history, not how many viewers the animation may attract. They explain why the NYCC announcement was framed around an anniversary and why readers may wonder how the screen project handles the novels.

A live-action film arrived in 2020; the new announcement is for television animation

Disney’s existing live-action Artemis Fowl film has its own release record. The studio lists a June 12, 2020 release, a runtime of 95 minutes and director Kenneth Branagh. The page describes that movie as based on Eoin Colfer’s book and says it debuted on Disney+. That gives fans a reference point for the franchise’s earlier screen adaptation. The 2026 news is different in format: Disney now says it has greenlit an animated television series for Disney Channel and Disney+. The announcement names the novels as its basis and does not call the series a continuation of the film. Disney Movies. Its screenwriters are Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl, and its cast includes Ferdia Shaw and Lara McDonnell. Disney also lists a PG classification for that film. The gallery identifies McDonnell as Holly Short, Josh Gad as Mulch Diggums, and Judi Dench as Commander Root.

That distinction remains useful when searching the service: Disney’s 2020 page describes a feature-length live-action adventure with its own cast and production team, while the new project is animated television with a different executive-producer group. The film page also identifies the Aculos, the fairies’ most powerful magical device, as the item Artemis must recover to ransom his father.

The book list cannot yet be turned into a release plan

Disney has not named which novels or characters the first episodes will cover, or whether the eight mainline books will be adapted in order. The official synopsis gives the broad setup, while Disney Books lists the print sequence and companion formats; neither source provides an episode plan. Fans can use the source material to see the options, but not to predict Disney’s adaptation order.

The project has enough confirmed detail to distinguish it from rumor: Disney Channel and Disney+, animation, Colfer as an executive producer, and Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson also producing. The next concrete items fans can look for are a release window, episode count, voice cast and production credits. None appears in the October announcement. Until one is published, the story’s adaptation scope remains open.
